The Chinese are playing games with commodities.

Interesting article.

"China is a major producer of several of these commodities (for example, China was the world’s largest producer of zinc in 2006, nearly double the output of its next-nearest competitor, Australia), making its export restrictions significant in the overall global supply-and-demand balance. "

I did not know that? What do they need with Australian minerals if they have their own? Is it literally just iron-ore that they need from us? If so, we're absolutely insane if we are banking on that alone to save us from recession.

If China is the largest zinc producer who wants more zinc from the second largest producer, then it seems that they want to dominate and monopolise that commodity.

Definitely, this ties in with your articles on rare earths.

I guess my concern was that perhaps a lot of Australians (including myself) have the misconception that China has no mineral deposits of it's own and NEEDS Australia to develop into the future.
Perhaps the reality is that the only thing China needs from us is Iron Ore (and Copper?) after all. That leaves us in a pretty poor position, because Iron Ore is not so rare, and it can be sourced from elsewhere (Russia, Brazil, Africa, Tibet?)
